Multivitamins linked to younger ‘biological age’: Study

Here's a recent article regarding multivitamins and aging.

The cells of multivitamin users may have a younger biological age than cells from non-users, according to new research from the US.

Researchers led by Honglei Chen, MD, PhD from National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences looked at the length of telomeres, DNA sequences at the end of chromosomes that shorten as cells replicate and age.

Dr Chen and his co-workers analysed multivitamin use and nutrient intakes, as well as telomere length of 586 women aged between 35 and 74 in the Sister Study. A 146-item food-frequency questionnaire was used to determine multivitamin use and nutrient intakes.

Compared to non-multivitamin users, the researchers noted that that telomeres were on average 5.1 per cent longer for daily multivitamin users.

Antioxidants and carotenoids linked to AMD improvements

Supplements of antioxidants and carotenoids may improve retinal health in people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), suggesting a role beyond prevention, suggests a new study from Italy.

A combination of vitamins C and E, zinc, copper, lutein, zeaxanthin, and astaxanthin was found to improve the function of the central retina among 27 people with non-advanced AMD, scientists report in the journal Ophthalmology.

"Because of the small number of patients enrolled, the present trial can be considered a pilot study and caution must be taken against drawing general conclusions," wrote lead author Vincenzo Parisi. "It is necessary to confirm our findings in a larger population and with long-term follow-up."

AMD is the leading cause of legal blindness for people over 55 years of age in the Western world, according to AMD
Great! More evidence! Even if the researchers themselves consider this as a "pilot study," it only confirms what we know in theory and in many clinical trials: anti-oxidants work to prevent degenerative diseases, in this case, AMD.

Antioxidants may stop fat cells formation, says study

Natural antioxidant compounds like flavonoids and phenolic acids could inhibit the formation of fat formation from fat cells, suggests new research from Taiwan.

A study of 15 phenolic acids and six flavonoids were studied for their ability to affect fat cells in laboratory cultures of mouse cells, with o-coumaric acid and rutin reported to inhibit activity of the glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) enzyme that forms triglycerides - fatty materials which at high levels increase the risk of heart disease.

"These results indicate that flavonoids and phenolic acids may play a role in the control of adipogenesis and they might have further implication in in vivo anti-obesity effects," wrote Chin-Lin Hsu and Gow-Chin Yen from National Chung Hsing University.
Interesting. If these research can be translated into humans, then it would be of benefit to people who want to lose weight.
